If you are entertaining guests for a dinner party or an informal gathering then you will undoubtably want to put on some delicious food so that your guests don’t go home at the end of the night feeling hungry. There are lots of food preparation ideas out there but the good thing about a chili bar is that it adds an element of fun to your party; after all, who doesn’t love the “build your own bowl” concept? Not only does it add an element of fun to your food buffet, but it also means that your guests will all be happy as they can essentially prepare their own bowl of food with all the things they like.

As the name suggests, a chili bar consists of your preferred chili recipe laid out on a tabletop along with all of the typical accompaniments that you would have with chili. The idea behind the chili bar concept is that its almost like a buffet, but you are essentially building your own chili recipe with the basic ingredients ready to scoop straight out of the dish (Or even straight from the slow cooker) and then your guests can add chopped tomatoes, fresh chilis, sliced cucumber, cheese and any other side dishes you wish to make available to them.

How to prepare for your chili bar

To make this easy for your guests, you ideally need a big tabletop area – this could be a traditional dining room table, a kitchen tabletop or any other bar-like surface that you have available to you in your home. If you are using a table, then you can lay a tablecloth over it to make it look visually appealing. If it is a kitchen bar then you can probably leave it as is – this simple approach will just add the home-cooking effect and make your guests feel at ease.

Once you have the bar ready, you will need to have lots of bowls or small dishes so that you can neatly lay out all of the accompaniments that you choose to go with your chili. If you are serving the chili itself in a bowl then you will need one that is large enough to contain the full amount of chili that you are preparing for your guests. Alternatively, you might opt to bring in your slow cooker and have your guests take their chili serving directly from the source, as it were.

You will also need serviettes, bowls for your guests to hold their food in, cutlery (knifes, forks and serving spoons) and also sauces and any other condiments.

The chili bar recipe

In our case we opted for a vegetarian chili dish although don’t let the name hold you back; this doesn’t have to be designed for vegetarians as such, it’s simply a chili recipe made from vegetables and Quorn; however anyone can enjoy this vegetarian dish. If you prefer to add meat then it will go just as well with various meats including chicken, turkey or the (if you are a chili traditionalist) beef.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp oil

  • 1 large onion, chopped

  • 1 large pepper, chopped

  • 400 gram chopped tomatoes

  • 400 gram baked beans or kidney beans

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp chilli powder

  • 1 fresh green chili

  • 0.5 tsp cumin powder

  • 1 vegetable stock cube

  • 1 tbsp tomato puree

  • 300 gram Quorn mince (Or meat alternative)

  • 1 Pinch of salt

Directions

  • First of all, put the oil into a large frying pan and heat on a medium flame for 5 minutes or until the oil has spread around the surface of the pan. Lower the heat a little and add the onions, peppers and chilis, frying them until they are soft.
  • Add the Quorn mince (Or meat alternative) and continue cooking until the mince is browned all over (With Quorn mince this should be roughly 2 – 3 minutes, with meat it may take a little longer).
  • Lower the flame so that it is on the lowest setting, then add the chopped tomatoes, beans, tomato puree, vegetable stock cube, garlic, chilli powder, cumin powder and salt. Cook the mixture for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Once cooked you can let the chili cool down completely before putting it in the freezer. It can later be defrosted and heated up on the day of your chili party. Alternatively, you can cook it on the day, but chili always tastes nicer the following day in our experience. Plus, it means that on party day all you have to do is reheat the chili mix and serve it with your side dishes – leaving you nice and chilled (No pun intended) to enjoy the party.

What sides to serve with your chili bar

In addition to the chili mix itself you can serve with a range of sides of your choice. If you need help with ideas, you could use any or all of the following –

  • Rice
  • Tortilla chips
  • fresh chilis (red, green or both)
  • cheese
  • onions
  • Jalapeños
  • tortilla chips
  • corn chips
  • cornbread
  • crusty bread rolls
